Chernobyl Catastrophe Containment Structure Can No Longer Effectively Blocks Radiation, Requires Significant Repair – IAEA

A containment structure covering the Chernobyl reactor core within Ukraine can no longer perform its main safety function of blocking radiation, as announced by the IAEA. This failure follows a drone attack earlier this year that caused significant damage in the protective shell.

Structural Compromise from Aerial Attack Compromises Containment System

A drone strike in the second month of the year caused a breach in the multibillion-euro “New Safe Confinement” arch. This enormous protective structure, built at a cost of €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was intended to seal off radioactive material over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the strike had degraded the integrity of the steel arch.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that the mission confirmed no lasting harm to key support structures or monitoring systems.

Historical Context of the Chernobyl Shelter

The initial 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl plant – at a time when Ukraine was part of the USSR – spewed radioactive fallout across Europe. In a hurried response, Soviet engineers constructed a concrete “sarcophagus” over the damaged reactor, but it had a 30-year lifespan. The New Safe Confinement was erected to enable the eventual dismantling of the old sarcophagus, the damaged reactor building, and the melted nuclear fuel within.

Current Situation and Required Steps

Although limited repair work has been done, the IAEA stressed that comprehensive restoration is essential. This is required to stop additional deterioration and to ensure long-term nuclear safety. Ukrainian authorities previously reported that a unmanned aircraft carrying a high-explosive warhead hit the facility, causing a fire and damaging the outer shielding.
